With a population of 2.2 million Houston, Texas is an established and ever growing major metropolitan area. Founded in 1836, the city is very diverse with over 90 languages spoken and it has the third-largest Hispanic population in the U.S. Nearly twenty percent of Houston residents were born outside of the U.S. Additionally, the city has a young population filled with multicultural ethnicities.

The cities economy is leaned on heavily in the great state of Texas. Houston has become a leader in energy, manufacturing, and transportation. Acknowledged as one the biggest producers of energy, Houston is home to five of the six major energy companies including Exxon-Mobil, Shell Oil, and British Petroleum.


Entertainment & the Arts


Houston’s visual and performing arts has been thriving for years and it attracts several million visitors per year. The cities arts center is based in the Theater District which is in downtown Houston and is home to six performance halls. The halls attract a variety of traveling Broadway acts, concerts, shows, and other performances. The Theater District has the second-largest concentration of theater seats in a downtown area in the United States. The city also hosts the Museum District which has many cultural institutions and exhibits on display including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Holocaust Museum, and the Houston Zoo.

A multitude of public parks surround the city including Hermann Park, Terry Hershey Park, Lake Houston Park and several others. Houston is home to 337 public parks and is known to have the most total area of parks and green space out of the ten most populous cities in the nation.

The city of Houston is also well-known for being the home to NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Visitors of the center can enjoy several interactive exhibits including a shuttle simulator, moon rock exhibit, and several presentations about NASA’s space flight program.

Residents of Houston can relax and enjoy a baseball game in the recently built and beautiful Minute Maid Park. The Astros have been the pride and joy of Texas since the early 1960’s reaching the playoffs during several seasons and even playing in the World Series in 2005.

The city is also home to the Houston Rockets of the NBA who have won two championships in the mid-1990’s and have had several Hall of Fame players play for the organization including Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Moses Malone, Clyde Drexler, and several others.

Football in the city of Houston is represented by the Houston Texans, a new team that was inducted into the NFL in 2002. The team has seen its low points but the organization is poised to be competitive in the coming years.
